Our Story
Since 1976, the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestras has been dedicated to challenging and inspiring young musicians through rich and meaningful musical experiences. Serving nearly 400 students from over 70 communities, EYSO began as a small group of string players under the direction of Robert Hanson. With the commitment of passionate volunteers and a distinguished roster of conductors, the organization has continually grown. In 1999, under the leadership of Artistic Director Randal Swiggum, EYSO gained national and international acclaim, including awards from the Illinois Council of Orchestras and a featured performance at the 2006 Aberdeen International Youth Festival in Scotland. Today, EYSO continues to thrive, offering diverse programs such as Flute Choir and Starter Strings, while adapting to challenges like the COVID pandemic with innovative engagement strategies.
