Elgin Symphony Orchestra

Our Story

Founded in 1950, the Elgin Symphony Orchestra began as the Elgin Civic Symphony Orchestra, led by Douglas Steensland. Over the years, it evolved into a professional orchestra in 1985, gaining recognition for its artistic excellence and community engagement. With notable music directors like Grammy award-winner Margaret Hillis and Andrew Grams, the ESO has consistently prioritized innovative programming. In 2023, Chad Goodman took the helm as the fifth music director, continuing this legacy.

The Elgin Symphony Orchestra is dedicated to providing musical experiences that resonate with the community's needs. With multiple 'Orchestra of the Year' awards, the ESO has launched impactful programs such as the Ainsworth Concerts for Youth and Musicians' Care, offering healing performances for patients and families.
