Our Story
Elbow Room was established in 2020 in response to the closure of various day programs due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The organization aims to support a vibrant community of Portland artists, many of whom have engaged in progressive art programs throughout their lives. Initially formed as a virtual group, Elbow Room provided an accessible platform for individuals experiencing intellectual and developmental disabilities to connect, socialize, and create art. Over time, as vaccines became available, small groups began meeting in public spaces to foster in-person artistic collaboration.
In August 2022, Elbow Room became a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit and secured a dedicated studio/gallery space in Southeast Portland. This space now serves as a hub for artists supported by various provider organizations, allowing them to explore their creativity and participate in a sustained art community.
