Our Story

Elan Ministries, Inc. is a dedicated nonprofit organization based in New Orleans, Louisiana. Founded in 2003 by Rev. Teresa J. Reiger, the organization began as an urban ministry internship program. The mission evolved significantly in 2005 following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, which brought an influx of volunteers eager to assist in recovery efforts. Elan Ministries welcomed these volunteers, providing meals and connecting them with community members in need.

In 2007, the organization formalized its volunteer-hosting efforts through the establishment of HisHands2Go, which continues to facilitate community development projects in the greater New Orleans area. A pivotal moment came when a property on Marais Street was gifted to Elan Ministries, featuring a 5,000 sq. ft. warehouse on a 1/4 acre plot. After thoughtful consideration, the staff decided to transform this space into a neighborhood garden and the future home of Elan Ministries.

In 2010, the Garden on Marais was established, evolving into a fully functioning urban farm. One of its key initiatives is the 4-H Kids Club, launched in 2015, which educates local youth on urban farming practices, nutrition, and environmental stewardship. Currently, Elan Ministries is renovating the warehouse to create a community gathering space, which will include a theater for the performing arts, lodging capacity, office space, and a commissary kitchen.

Impact
