Our Story

The Edge School of the Arts (ESOTA) was founded in 1996, inspired by the legacy of the Bernice Johnson Cultural Arts Center, a cornerstone of cultural excellence in Southeast Queens. Beverly Edge, our Facilities Manager, was one of the first students at BJ’s, and her daughters, Donna, Wendy, and Kerri, followed in her footsteps. In 1993, Kerri established the children’s dance ensemble KECDE! within the BJCAC. Following BJ’s health decline, the family decided to honor her legacy by opening their own school, leading to the birth of ESOTA in September 1996. This family-owned institution is led by experienced professionals dedicated to nurturing young talent in African American dance, enriching both local and international audiences.

Impact

At ESOTA, dance instruction transcends the stage. Students learn collaboration, community service, and essential life skills through performances and projects. They become artivists, using dance to educate audiences on history and advocate for social justice. This holistic approach fosters not only artistic talent but also social responsibility among young artists.
