In the 1970s, East Somerville faced isolation due to the construction of Interstate 93, leading to a decline in its vibrant business district. However, the early 2000s saw a resurgence as new immigrants from Central America, Brazil, and Haiti revitalized the area by opening restaurants, salons, and shops. In 2009, East Somerville Main Streets was established to support this local community, focusing on the 78% of businesses that are immigrant-owned.

Building Community Connections

Through various initiatives, East Somerville Main Streets has fostered community programming that bridges cultural divides. The organization has successfully launched street festivals, beautification projects, and storefront improvements, enhancing the neighborhood's appeal and quality of life. Each year, 10-12 direct Technical Assistance projects are completed for micro-enterprises, ensuring ongoing support for local businesses.
