Our Story
In October 1987, the vision of Rev. D. L. Barrett sparked the creation of the East Cleburne Community Center (ECCC). A gathering of community leaders, ministers, and concerned citizens came together to establish a safe haven for recreation and learning for the children of Cleburne, Texas. This initiative led to the formation of a dedicated team, including charter members such as Rev. and Mrs. D. L. Barrett, Minister Pauline Lauderdale, and others, who worked tirelessly to bring this vision to life.
The first banquet held in February 1988 celebrated Black History Month, marking the beginning of ECCC's commitment to community engagement. The Center took the lead in organizing the official Juneteenth celebration, further solidifying its role as a community cornerstone. With the support of local residents and businesses, an old grocery store was transformed into a vibrant community hub, where essential programs could be offered.
In 1991, ECCC became a United Way of Johnson County agency, allowing it to expand its reach and serve even more individuals. The legacy of Rev. Barrett, who remained dedicated to the Center until his passing in 2003, continues to inspire the mission of ECCC. His motto, 'Together We Can Make a Difference,' resonates through the ongoing efforts to uplift the community.
