Our Story

Founded in 1980 by Arlene Pessar and her son Eric Lopez, who was born with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), debra of America emerged from a profound need for awareness and research into this rare disease. Eric's passionate advocacy led him to testify before Congress six times, resulting in the establishment of clinical centers and a national patient registry. Frustrated by the lack of medical information, Arlene and Eric took action, creating the first informational materials on EB and mobilizing regional representatives to spread awareness.

In its inaugural year, debra of America reached out to 100 EB families, laying the groundwork for a community that would grow and thrive. The organization's efforts garnered national attention, including recognition from President Ronald Reagan, who declared the first-ever "National Epidermolysis Bullosa Awareness Week" in 1984. Since then, debra of America has remained steadfast in its mission to fund research for a cure while providing essential services to patients and their families.

Impact

Each year, debra of America invests an average of $1.5 million in direct-to-patient programs, distributing over 115,000 wound care supplies to families in more than 42 states. The dedicated EB Nurse program supports around 130 unique families monthly, ensuring they receive the care and resources they need.
