Dyslexia Support

Transforming Lives Through Literacy

In 1984, a group of dedicated citizens in Southeast Baltimore recognized a troubling trend: many repeat juvenile offenders were struggling with dyslexia. With the guidance of renowned psychologist Roger Saunders, they discovered that these young individuals faced significant challenges due to their learning disabilities. This realization sparked the creation of the Maryland Associates for Dyslexic Adults and Youth (MADAY), a pioneering program aimed at steering youth away from crime and towards literacy and employability.

Since its inception, the Dyslexia Tutoring Program has provided specialized, one-on-one tutoring to dyslexic children and adults, free of charge. Utilizing trained volunteers, the program offers at least 60 hours of personalized instruction, focusing on improving reading, writing, and spelling skills through the effective Orton-Gillingham method.

Making a Lasting Impact

Today, approximately 15-20% of the population suffers from dyslexia or other language-based learning disabilities. This means that one in five individuals in Baltimore struggles to read. The need for dedicated volunteer tutors is ever-present, as the program continues to change lives.
