Our Story

Founded in 1918 by Dr. Aaron McDuffie Moore, Durham Colored Library Incorporated is one of Durham’s oldest nonprofit organizations. It was established to provide book-lending services to African Americans during the Jim Crow era, evolving over the years to include educational and cultural initiatives such as the Merrick Washington Magazine and the Techies4Tomorrow project.
