Founded in 2002 in Pennsylvania, Dogs Deserve Better has dedicated itself to advocating for the welfare of chained dogs. The organization began by educating communities about the dangers of chaining dogs and providing essential resources such as fencing and veterinary care. In 2011, the vision expanded with the acquisition of Bad Newz Kennels in Smithfield, Virginia, which was transformed into Good Newz Rehab, a unique shelter designed to rehabilitate and care for dogs in need.

In 2018, the organization identified a significant need for support in Central Virginia, leading to the expansion of its fencing program and the establishment of a comprehensive community outreach initiative. In 2023, Dogs Deserve Better transitioned its headquarters to Central Virginia, continuing its mission to be a voice for neglected and forgotten dogs.
