Our Story

The Do The Right Thing Program was established in 1990 during a Miami Police Department awards ceremony, where a teenager was honored for turning in a loaded gun found at school. Inspired by the positive impact of this recognition, community volunteers collaborated with the Miami Police Department to create an ongoing program that rewards school-age youths for their commendable actions. Today, Do The Right Thing is dedicated to celebrating and acknowledging young individuals for their positive accomplishments, behavior, and good deeds.

Impact

Each month, up to 1,000 students are nominated by teachers, parents, police officers, and community members for their exemplary behavior. A selection committee chooses ten winners who are honored at a ceremony at the Miami Police College Auditorium. The Chief of Police presents them with mini tablets, plaques, chocolate trophies, and certificates for free pizza and local attractions. Additionally, one top middle or high school winner receives a trip to Washington, D.C., while one top elementary school winner enjoys a trip to Rapids Water Park for four.
