Equalizing Access to Experiential Learning Opportunities

DiscoverU: Empowering Students for Success

Founded in 2007 in response to the underachievement of students in a Houston-area high school, DiscoverU was born from the vision of Principal Steve Amstutz and educator Monica Piquet-Rodriguez. They recognized that many students lacked the informed aspirations and personal leadership skills necessary to navigate the college landscape. To address this gap, they launched the "Fantastic Learning Opportunities" (FLO) program, a multi-tiered approach designed to provide students with essential resources and support for college and career preparation.

Initially established as a school-based non-profit to assist students financially with tuition and travel costs for FLOs, DiscoverU has since expanded its reach. By 2010, the success of the FLO program led to its growth across various schools and communities in Houston. Today, DiscoverU proudly supports nearly 3,500 FLO alumni, striving to equalize access to high-quality, out-of-school learning opportunities for thousands more young people.

Impact of DiscoverU

DiscoverU students consistently outperform their peers, achieving a 99% high school graduation rate, 75% college matriculation, and a 41% post-secondary completion rate. An impressive 98% of participants report that their out-of-school learning experiences positively impact their future success.
