Our Story

Founded in 1977 by passionate disability rights activists, the Disability Empowerment Center, formerly known as the Alliance of People With disAbilities, has been a beacon of hope for residents of King County. This community-based nonprofit organization is dedicated to assisting individuals with disabilities of all ages in gaining the skills necessary for independence. Through advocacy for policy changes and the implementation of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the center has championed equal access for all.

Impact

Every year, the Disability Empowerment Center connects with hundreds of individuals, providing free services that have led to over 12,000 referrals to critical resources in the past 12 years. More than 1,000 people have developed personalized plans for independent living in the last decade, showcasing the center's commitment to fostering autonomy.
