Our Story
The Detroit Chesed Project began with a simple question posed by five friends on a road trip to Chicago in 2014: "What if we could help all the people who aren’t being helped?" Inspired by the charitable infrastructure they observed in other Jewish communities, they returned to Detroit determined to create a similar system of support for their own community. After consulting with local leaders, they founded Tomchei Shabbos, delivering prepared Shabbos meals to underprivileged families.
When disaster struck in the form of severe flooding, the resolve of the Detroit Chesed founders only strengthened. They collaborated with local organizations and donors to distribute hundreds of brand new mattresses and furniture, providing comfort and stability to families in distress. This spirit of kindness has driven the organization to expand its services, addressing unmet needs wherever they arise.
Our Impact
Today, the Detroit Chesed Project operates as a community-wide organization, led by dedicated individuals who share a commitment to kindness. The mission is clear: to identify and respond to unmet needs swiftly and efficiently, while preserving the dignity of those served. As first responders in times of crisis, Detroit Chesed acts as a safety net for the vulnerable, connecting individuals to essential resources and creating solutions when necessary.
