Supporting Immigrant Representation in Media

Our Story

Founded in 2011 by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas and a team of media professionals, Define American was created to amplify the voices of U.S. citizen allies in the national conversation on immigration. The organization has sparked nationwide discussions about immigration and visibility, challenging the narrative surrounding undocumented individuals. In June 2012, Vargas and 35 other undocumented Americans graced the cover of TIME Magazine with the powerful title, "We Are Americans*"—a testament to the impact of Define American's work.

Impact

In the past three years, Define American has reached over 30 million people, humanizing immigrant experiences and inspiring action. Through data-driven methods, the organization challenges misconceptions in the media and provides essential narrative tools to drive social change.
