The Deer Lake Association was established in 1991 in response to the proposed Polaris Project, a large camp for troubled youth that threatened the local environment. Thanks to the dedication of community members, the project was successfully averted, and the land was preserved as part of the Wabu Woods Scientific and Natural Area. This grassroots effort has fostered a strong commitment to protecting the natural beauty and ecological integrity of Deer Lake.
