Our Story
The Darien Nature Center began as a fledgling summer program in 1979, initiated by a dedicated group of citizens eager to open the eyes and minds of the community to the natural beauty surrounding them. With a focus on teaching respect for and understanding of the environment, the first Board of Directors included active members from the Audubon Society, the Conservation Commission, and local schools. As interest grew, the search for a permanent home led to a generous donation of three and a half acres of woodland in 1988. After a successful capital campaign, the Nature Center opened its doors to a beautiful, light-filled barn in February 2002. Today, it stands as a thriving community center, offering robust environmental educational programs, a diverse collection of live animals, seasonal exhibits, and engaging lectures.
