About Dance for the Cure

Founded in 2000, Dance for the Cure is a dedicated nonprofit organization based in New Jersey, committed to raising awareness and providing financial support to breast cancer patients. The organization was born from the personal journey of Kathleen Cirioli, who, alongside her friend Joanne Liscovitz, transformed their experiences with breast cancer into a powerful advocacy platform through the art of dance.

Our Story

In 1998, Kathleen faced a life-altering breast cancer diagnosis. This challenge ignited a passion for advocacy, leading to the creation of an original awareness program that highlighted her journey. With the help of Dr. Debbie Beiter, the program featured impactful dance performances, including the emotional 'I Believe' and the lively 'Go and Get Your Mammogram.' The initiative quickly gained traction, reaching audiences from local churches to hospitals and even appearing on the Rosie O’Donnell Show in 1999.

As the organization grew, so did its mission. Recognizing the financial burdens many women face during their battle with breast cancer, Dance for the Cure was established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2000. The annual Ribbons of Hope fundraiser, launched in 2006, has become a beloved community event, showcasing the creativity of volunteers who craft over 200 raffle baskets each year.

Community Impact

In 2016, the 'Tie the Town Pink' initiative began, transforming Hillsborough into a sea of pink during October. This movement has expanded to 31 towns across New Jersey, fostering a sense of community and hope. The 'Pink Bow Project,' initiated in 2018, decorates local businesses with symbolic pink bows, further spreading awareness. By 2023, around 400 bows adorned the streets, with plans to extend this initiative into Mercer County in 2024.

In 2023, Dance for the Cure achieved a significant milestone, surpassing one million dollars in funds raised to assist breast cancer patients in Hunterdon, Middlesex, and Somerset counties.
