D-Composed is a Black chamber music collective founded in 2017, dedicated to honoring the contributions of Black culture and creativity to music. This all-Black ensemble focuses exclusively on the works of Black composers, challenging the traditional orchestral repertoire that often overlooks these vital contributions. By creating culturally-based spaces that reflect the Black experience, D-Composed engages communities historically excluded from classical music.
D-Composed offers free and accessible performances to communities traditionally excluded from classical music, including schools, domestic violence shelters, senior centers, and juvenile detention centers. Their educational materials have reached over 500 teachers and students in the Chicagoland area, expanding the mission of representation and access to Black creativity and culture.
