About the DC Gay Flag Football League
The DC Gay Flag Football League (DCGFFL) began in the mid-90s when two groups of players started gathering for flag football in Washington, D.C. The first group formed in 1994 at Francis Field near Dupont Circle, while the second group began playing near the Washington Monument Mall in 1997. In 1998, these groups united, laying the foundation for what would become a vibrant community of LGBTQ+ athletes.
In 2003, the league established its first traveling team, the Washington Monuments, which made history by winning the National Gay Super Bowl in Boston. This victory was a significant milestone, showcasing the talent and determination of DCGFFL players. The league continued to grow, hosting Gay Bowl X in 2009, which attracted players from across the nation to compete at Carter Barron Fields.
Officially launched in the Fall of 2010, the DCGFFL started with seven teams and 102 players. Today, it boasts 20 teams and approximately 270 players, offering both Fall and Spring seasons, along with a summer tournament in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. The league also supports up to five travel teams that participate in annual tournaments across the country.
