Our Story
For over three decades, the community has faced the devastating impact of major floods. Each time, the response was filled with enthusiasm but lacked the necessary coordination. After Hurricane Harvey, 24 congregations united to form a long-term disaster recovery organization, Hope Disaster Recovery (HDR), in October 2017. With limited resources, HDR began its mission to serve northwest Harris County.
In a pivotal moment, HDR received an $8.2 million grant from UMCOR to manage the Disaster Case Management Program, helping over 1,800 families secure $17.5 million in assistance for unmet needs. The Home Rebuild program flourished with support from The American Red Cross, SBP, and the United Way, leading to the repair of 454 homes affected by multiple disasters.
In 2020, HDR spearheaded the Texas Congregational Disaster Readiness (TXCDR) program, providing essential training and coordination for over 200 congregations. In its first year, TXCDR delivered 2,800 hours of training to 1,550 volunteers, enhancing community preparedness.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, HDR expanded its services to include Navigation and Basic Needs, establishing Vaccines for All to assist vulnerable communities. Partnerships with Harris County and the City of Houston facilitated rental assistance, while Disaster Hunger Relief addressed food insecurities in East Harris and surrounding counties.
