Our Story
In 2013, co-founder Vanessa Morrison recognized the unique challenges faced by children of color in foster and adoptive care regarding their hair and skin care needs. Through product drives, public speaking, and free hair care services, Vanessa and her team dedicated countless hours to raise awareness and provide resources for these children and their families. In 2014, Cut It Forward was officially established to serve various communities, and by 2018, it became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, expanding its reach and impact.
Cut It Forward prides itself on being representative of individuals with lived experience. Many of its foster care alumni committee members have firsthand knowledge of these challenges, having begun their advocacy as young as 15 years old. The organization’s mission transcends hair and skin care support; it aims to ensure that children of color are seen, heard, and celebrated for who they are. By creating accessible resources, Cut It Forward has become a nationally recognized resource for children, families, and child welfare professionals.
