Our Story

In 1948, Mike Martin, the founder of CRISTA, envisioned a youth home near the abandoned Firland Tuberculosis Sanatorium in Shoreline, Washington. His determination led to the establishment of a vibrant community dedicated to serving youth and the elderly. Initially rejected by local commissioners, Martin's persistence paid off when he was granted a 56-acre campus for just $1.00 a year, with the condition of creating a retirement community. With the support of over 70 families, King’s Garden opened its doors, providing a home for youth and elderly residents alike.

As the community grew, so did its mission. King’s Schools was established to provide Christ-centered education, and the first graduating class celebrated in 1951. The ministry expanded further with summer camps and the launch of KGDN radio station in 1954, allowing the community to share their stories and faith with a broader audience.

In 1979, King’s Garden evolved into CRISTA, embodying the mission of putting Christianity into action. The organization has since welcomed World Concern, an international relief organization, into its family, continuing to serve the poor and marginalized. Today, CRISTA encompasses various ministries focused on education, international relief, senior care, and media.
