Our Story

Founded in 1946 by Edna Ruth Byler, Ten Thousand Villages began with a simple act of selling hand-embroidered textiles from Puerto Rican women. This initiative blossomed into a global fair trade movement, empowering artisans and promoting sustainable income opportunities for marginalized communities across more than 20 countries.

Impact

Ten Thousand Villages significantly impacts tens of thousands of artisans and their families by providing fair wages and sustainable development opportunities. Over the past 19 years, the organization has invested over $110 million in international artisan purchases, showcasing its commitment to fair trade and social transformation.
