Courage MKE

Our Story

Founded by Brad and Nick Schlaikowski, Courage Initiative Ltd emerged from a heartfelt journey into foster care. Over 16 months, they recognized a critical need for safe and affirming care for LGBTQ+ youth in out-of-home situations. The first Courage event, aimed at supporting homeless LGBTQ youth, raised funds for Pathfinders and marked the beginning of a community-driven movement.

With the support of small donations from compassionate individuals, Courage Initiative was able to purchase the first Courage House in cash, establishing Wisconsin’s first and only home for displaced LGBTQ+ youth. This initiative has garnered national recognition, leading to acceptance into the Ali Forney Center’s mentorship program and receiving accreditation from the Joint Commission.

In a significant expansion, Courage Initiative acquired an apartment building, now known as the C2 Apartments, which serves as a transitional living program for youth in need. The community rallied once again to renovate this space, creating a unique program that stands out in Wisconsin.
