Council for Unity

Our Story

The Council for Unity was founded in 1975 by Robert J. De Sena, an English teacher at John Dewey High School in Brooklyn, New York. This initiative was born out of a need to confront gang violence by uniting gang leaders to address their racial and cultural divisions. Since then, the Council for Unity has partnered with various institutions to promote unity, safety, and achievement in schools and communities.

Impact

Through its dedicated programs, Council for Unity has achieved an impressive 88% college placement rate and a 90% high school graduation rate, while also reducing violence and gang-related incidents by 70%.
