Our Story

Founded in 2003 by Catherine Craig, Conservation Through Poverty Alleviation International Inc (CPALI) emerged from a deep concern for the wildlife and communities surrounding Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania. Witnessing the devastating effects of over-harvesting, Craig envisioned a sustainable solution that would benefit both local people and the environment. By introducing natural resource farming and connecting local communities to global markets, CPALI has pioneered wild silk gardening in northeastern Madagascar, creating a model for community-centered conservation.

Our Impact

In just three months of silk production, farmers can earn enough to send a child to school for a year. Currently, CPALI collaborates with 12 farmers' groups across 15 communities near the Makira Protected Area and Masoala National Park. Since its inception, CPALI has expanded from a pilot group of 12 farmers in 2009 to over 300 farmers today, nearly doubling its numbers each year. Together, they have planted over 30,000 trees, enhancing local biodiversity and fostering community resilience.
