Our Story

Founded in 1960 by Elaine Mikels, Conard House was the first halfway house in San Francisco, dedicated to creating a transitional community for individuals with mental illness. Over the years, the organization has evolved to focus on supportive housing and mental health services, emphasizing community and empowerment for its residents.

Conard House serves over 1,450 adults annually, providing essential services that help prevent homelessness, re-hospitalization, and incarceration. Residents typically stay in long-term housing for an average of 10 years, during which they stabilize their mental health and develop job skills.
