Our Story
In 1975, Bernice “Bunny” Skirboll experienced a life-changing automobile accident that led her to discover the transformative power of friendship during her recovery. Inspired by her journey, she initiated the Mental Health Association’s Adopt-A-Patient Program, which evolved into the community-driven Compeer model. Under her leadership, Compeer Rochester grew from a local initiative to an internationally recognized organization, dedicated to fostering healing friendships for individuals facing mental health challenges. Today, Compeer Rochester continues to honor Bunny's vision by providing essential companionship and support to those in need, while actively working to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health.
