About Compass for Kids

Founded in 2011 by Molly Berendt, Compass for Kids emerged as a vital ministry of Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church, specifically designed to support children experiencing homelessness in Springfield, Illinois. The organization was established to eliminate barriers that hinder these children from participating in essential after-school and summer programs, such as financial constraints, complex paperwork, and transportation issues.

With initial funding from United Way of Central Illinois in 2012, Compass for Kids expanded its community-based, volunteer-driven model, launching innovative initiatives like Camp Compass in 2013 and the first Backpack Feeding Program in the county in 2014. By 2016, Compass for Kids became an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, continuing its mission to serve the most vulnerable children in the community.

In partnership with Springfield Public Schools – District 186, Compass for Kids has transformed Camp Compass into the largest summer learning provider for the district. During the challenging years of the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization adapted swiftly, ensuring that programs continued to operate virtually and hybrid, introducing new initiatives such as Meals that Matter and Book Club.

Today, Compass for Kids runs three impactful programs: Camp Compass, focusing on academic support during the summer; Club Compass, dedicated to social-emotional development during the school year; and the Youth Leadership Development Program (YLDP), which empowers middle and high school alumni to achieve their educational goals.
