Our Story

Founded in 1997 by Executive Director Michele Kotler, Community-Word Project uses creative writing and multidisciplinary arts as essential components of public school education. This initiative ensures that young people can envision, invest in, and build a community that meets their needs. Inspired by her own experiences with an undiagnosed learning disability in a low-income neighborhood, Michele and the team have dedicated themselves to expanding interdisciplinary arts education, helping students express themselves, and supporting artists in learning to teach.

Impact

Since its inception, Community-Word Project has trained over 4,000 teachers and 900 artists in collaborative, culturally responsive multidisciplinary art programs.
