Community United Against Violence: A Legacy of Empowerment

Founded in 1979 in response to the tragic assassinations of Harvey Milk and George Moscone, Community United Against Violence (CUAV) stands as the oldest LGBTQ anti-violence organization in the United States. Located in San Francisco’s Castro District, CUAV has a rich history of advocating for community safety and supporting those affected by violence. From pioneering initiatives like the safety whistle campaign to establishing a 24-hour crisis line, CUAV has continually evolved to meet the needs of the LGBTQI community.

In the late 1990s, CUAV adopted an anti-oppression framework, launching programs such as TransAction to combat anti-transgender police violence and the Love & Justice Program to empower LGBTQ youth of color through the arts. The organization’s commitment to grassroots community empowerment was revitalized in 2009, transitioning to a shared leadership model that integrates support services with opportunities for survivors to lead and organize against violence.

Impacting Lives and Building Safe Communities

CUAV is dedicated to healing Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer individuals who have experienced violence and abuse. The organization strives to create safe communities where everyone can thrive, fostering resilience and empowerment among survivors.
