Our Story

Community MusicWorks (CMW) is a nationally recognized community-based organization located in Providence, Rhode Island. Founded in 1997 by Sebastian Ruth, CMW utilizes music education and performance to foster meaningful relationships between children, families, and professional musicians in urban neighborhoods. Starting with just fifteen violin students, CMW has grown into a vibrant community with thirteen professional resident musicians and over 125 neighborhood children participating free of charge. Students receive instruments at no cost and engage in lessons, studio classes, and workshops, ensuring access to quality music education regardless of talent or ability.

Impact

CMW has been recognized for its innovative approach to music education, achieving a remarkable 90 percent student retention rate year after year. The organization has garnered national attention, being featured in The New Yorker as a revolutionary model where the lines between performing and teaching blur. CMW has also received prestigious awards, including the CMAcclaim Award from Chamber Music America for its significant impact on the community.
