Community Ministry of Southwest Denver: A Legacy of Hope
Founded in 1966, Community Ministry of Southwest Denver has been a beacon of hope for families in need. The organization emerged from a desire to address poverty in the College View neighborhood, where local residents identified a critical need for affordable clothing and household items. With the support of Brentwood United Methodist Church and a group of dedicated volunteers, the ministry began its journey with a thrift store and quickly evolved to meet the growing needs of the community.
In 1967, College View Ministry was established, and by 1971, it was renamed Community Ministry to better reflect its mission of collaboration and support. Over the years, the organization has expanded its services to include a food bank, transportation assistance, utility support, and holiday programs that bring joy to families during the festive season.
Impacting Lives in Southwest Denver
Community Ministry serves some of the most vulnerable populations in Denver, where over half of the children in certain neighborhoods qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many families struggle with low-wage jobs and rising living costs, making it difficult to provide basic necessities. The ministry's food pantry, clothing bank, and energy assistance programs have been instrumental in helping families stabilize their situations and improve their quality of life.
