Our Story

Community Housing Improvement Program Incorporated (CHIP) began in 1973 as a collaboration between California State University, Chico, and the City of Chico. Founded by visionaries Jim Jessee, Keith Hopkins, Bill Murphy, and Kevin Campbell, CHIP aimed to revitalize a neighborhood south of the campus through a housing rehabilitation program. In 1980, the organization expanded its mission by becoming a USDA Self-Help Housing grantee, extending its reach across several counties. Following the devastating Camp Fire in 2018, CHIP dedicated itself to the long-term recovery of the region, rebuilding its rental community and constructing numerous single-family homes.

Our Impact

CHIP has successfully built over 2,850 housing units across a seven-county service area, positively impacting the lives of more than 1,800 residents. By providing affordable housing solutions, CHIP empowers individuals and families to thrive.
