Our Story

Over 30 years ago, founder Brian Lacy recognized a need in the Alberta Street neighborhood of Portland. Kids were riding bikes that needed repairs, and as a trained mechanic, Lacy had a vision: teach these children how to fix their own bikes. This initiative not only empowered the youth but also fostered a sense of community. As more community members began donating bikes, the bicycle transformed into a powerful tool for empowerment. Today, the Community Cycling Center operates a full-service bike shop, helping riders build skills and confidence while promoting cycling as a sustainable mode of transportation.

Our Impact

By broadening access to bicycling, the Community Cycling Center provides individuals—especially from underserved communities—with an affordable, healthy, and environmentally friendly way to navigate their neighborhoods. Bicycling enhances physical well-being, reduces transportation costs, and connects people to jobs, education, and essential services.
