Our Story

Communities In Schools of Whatcom-Skagit is dedicated to meeting the unique needs of students and schools in Whatcom County. Founded in the 1970s by Bill Milliken, the organization has evolved into the nation’s leading dropout prevention initiative, operating in 25 states and the District of Columbia. Since its inception in Washington in 1991, CIS Whatcom has focused on addressing local challenges such as rising dropout rates and diminishing parent engagement through mentoring, tutoring, and essential support services.

Impact

Last year, 214 students receiving individualized support showed outstanding progress: 68% improved coursework, 82% improved behavior, 84% improved attendance, and 100% stayed in school.
