Our Story

Communities In Schools (CIS) began in the 1970s on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, founded by Bill Milliken. The concept of 'street academies' was introduced to Charlotte in 1984, leading to the establishment of CIS-Charlotte in 1985. Today, this vital organization provides targeted case management services to over 6,000 students annually across 54 schools in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area.

Impact

CIS-Charlotte ensures that 99% of students are present and ready to learn, with 88% of seniors graduating and pursuing higher education or entering the workforce.
