Our Story

The Common School was founded by Emily Johnson, a visionary educator dedicated to creating a developmental approach to learning. Established in 1967, the school began its journey in the parish hall of Grace Episcopal Church and has since evolved through relocations and expansions. Now situated on Larch Hill, just south of Amherst College, the school is surrounded by three acres of land that borders conservation areas and farmland, providing a rich environment for experiential learning.

Our Impact

The mission of The Common School is to engage students in a transformative, progressive education that fosters a love of learning, critical thinking, and a commitment to social justice and environmental stewardship.
