Our Story

Founded in 1994, the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative (CFI) emerged from a collaboration of nonprofit organizations, dedicated individuals, and public agencies. This partnership was born out of a pressing need to safeguard the natural integrity of Colorado’s iconic Fourteeners, following a 1993 study that highlighted the environmental impacts of increasing recreational use. With founding members including the Colorado Mountain Club and the US Forest Service, CFI has become the nation’s leading organization for high-altitude trail-building, terrain restoration, and visitor education.

Our Impact

CFI actively protects and preserves the fragile ecosystems of Colorado’s 54 peaks over 14,000 feet, engaging local communities and minimizing damage while enhancing accessibility for hikers.
