Our Journey with Cole
Dr. Megan B. McGavern shares the heartfelt story of her son, Cole, who was diagnosed with autism at the age of four. This diagnosis was a turning point, leading to a relentless pursuit of healing and understanding. Inspired by the book "The Horse Boy" by Rupert Isaacson, a transformative journey began. In 2017, a homeschooling Movement Method (MM) program was established, followed by the Horse Boy Method (HBM) in 2018. The dream took shape in 2019 when 18 acres were acquired in Yorktown, creating a sanctuary for healing.
In April 2020, the family transitioned to this new land with their therapy horses, Majana and Diego. The arrival of a third horse, Neron, from Germany in May 2021 marked another milestone. Cole's progress has been remarkable; from speaking just 10 words a day to over 300 words in an hour while riding. His journey from potential feeding tube dependency to thriving above the 90th percentile in weight showcases the power of equine therapy.
Once unable to enjoy the beach due to sensory challenges, Cole now finds joy in the sand and surf. This journey is not just about Cole; it’s about building a community of hope and support for families facing similar challenges.
