Our Story

Coconut Grove Cares, Inc. was founded in 1948 by Elizabeth Virrick and Father Theodore Gibson to combat social injustice in West Coconut Grove. Originally a Slum Clearance Project, it has evolved to meet community needs, focusing on providing safe spaces and programs for children and families facing hardships. The Barnyard, opened in 1983, serves as a community center offering free after-school and summer programs for children aged 5-13.
