Our Story

For over 40 years, the Coalition for the Homeless has been at the forefront of addressing New York City’s homelessness crisis. The organization’s landmark legal victory, Callahan v. Carey, established the right to shelter for homeless adult men, paving the way for further advancements in rights for homeless women and children. Through a combination of lifesaving frontline services and impactful advocacy, the Coalition continues to fight for the rights and dignity of the homeless population.

Impact

Every day, the Coalition provides essential support to over 3,500 homeless individuals, including emergency food, blankets, and eviction prevention services. The mobile soup kitchen serves hot meals to 1,000 people living on the streets each night, while Crisis Services assist more than 10,000 individuals annually with various challenges, from lost identification to mental health needs. This comprehensive approach ensures that immediate relief is coupled with long-term solutions.
