About Coach Sam

Coach Sam is a God-fearing father, grandfather, brother, minister, and retired youth athletics coach with over 40 years of dedicated service in the upper 9th ward of New Orleans, Louisiana. His journey began in the late 1970s when he transformed a neglected, wooded area into what is now known as Eastshore Playground. Armed with a lawn mower, a machete, and a vision, Coach Sam created a safe haven for children to engage in sports and recreation. His mission has always been to empower youth, particularly those from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds, through the vehicle of sports and mentorship.
