Our Story

In 2012, a critical environmental issue was uncovered by founding Board Member Mark Grey, who noticed oil-slicked water near the west shore of Lake Union. This discovery led to the realization that polluted street runoff was being discharged directly into the lake from the Eastern Avenue catch basin. To combat this, Mark collaborated with Jeremy Febus, Alexandra Ramsden, and Myer Harrell to develop a solution: engineered bioretention swales. Together, they established Clean Lake Union, LLC, focusing on financing and installing these swales around Lake Union.

With the support of organizations like The Nature Conservancy, Salmon-Safe, and Boeing, Clean Lake Union has made significant strides in promoting clean water solutions. In March 2018, the organization obtained its 501(c)(3) status and rebranded as Clean Washington Waters, continuing its mission to enhance water quality in the region.

Our Impact

The Aurora Bridge Project is a testament to the organization's commitment, addressing nearly 2 million gallons of polluted runoff entering Lake Union and the Fremont Cut each year. This multi-year initiative is made possible through innovative partnerships with private developers, the State of Washington, and local businesses.
