City with Dwellings

Our Story

In 2012, community and faith leaders in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County recognized the urgent need for winter emergency shelter. They mobilized congregations, community groups, and civic organizations to create a multi-site seasonal shelter outreach. City with Dwellings was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2017, dedicated to connecting with vulnerable unhoused neighbors year-round through street outreach, resource navigation, and programming at the Community First Center.

Employing low-barrier strategies grounded in trauma-informed care, healing, and harm reduction, City with Dwellings elevates the lived expertise of those experiencing homelessness. By building relationships with unsheltered neighbors, the organization provides the assistance and encouragement necessary for individuals to take steps toward health and housing stability.

Impact

City with Dwellings serves as the primary resource for the unsheltered or 'street' homeless community in Forsyth County. The organization offers safe spaces, housing assistance, advocacy, transportation, and access to essential resources, enabling vulnerable neighbors to achieve housing stability. Outreach staff build trusting relationships through personalized strategies, supporting individuals in their journey from trauma and homelessness toward healing and thriving in stable housing.
