Help Housing Hope

Our Story

Christian Community Action Inc (CCA) began in 1966 as a collaborative effort between Catholics and Protestants to translate their shared Christian faith into meaningful action. The first significant initiative arose in 1967 when a devastating fire left a family homeless on Congress Ave in New Haven. Under the guidance of Rev. David Nehring, CCA opened its doors, later relocating to 168 Davenport Avenue in 1971. With the visionary leadership of Rev. Philip Grigsby and Rev. Karl Hilgert, CCA established vital programs providing emergency assistance, Thanksgiving baskets, and expanded its emergency shelter program to 17 apartments by acquiring property in 1978. In 1988, Rev. Bonita Grubbs took the helm as Executive Director, leading CCA to implement the 18-apartment Stepping Stone Transitional Housing Program in 1993 and expanding advocacy efforts to promote grassroots and public policy initiatives. Today, CCA continues to be a beacon of hope and support for families in need, fostering positive change in the community and public policy.
