Our Story
Childswork Learning Center was founded by Shannon Newmark in 1984, driven by the belief that every child is unique and capable of self-directed growth. This philosophy remains at the core of the center's mission today. Initially starting with a single half-day class on the Tucker Maxon Oral School Campus, Childswork has grown significantly over the years. The center now operates 18 different classes, serving approximately 250 children and their families in Southeast Portland.
Childswork's rich history is marked by its commitment to inclusivity, integrating deaf and hearing children in a nurturing preschool environment. This unique approach fosters a community built on respect, acceptance, and responsibility. The center emphasizes developmentally appropriate practices and child-initiated learning, ensuring that each child engages their body, mind, and heart in meaningful ways.
