Welcome to the Children’s Center of New Milford

Since its inception in September 1971, the Children’s Center of New Milford has been dedicated to nurturing the minds and hearts of young children. Starting with just a handful of children in a donated space, this nonprofit organization has blossomed into a beacon of quality early childhood education, serving over 100 children each year. The Center’s journey began with the generous support of St. John’s Church, which provided a home during its formative years.

A Rich Educational Experience

Located in the heart of New Milford, the Children’s Center has transformed the entire town into a vibrant classroom. In 1980, the Center purchased a large Tudor building on Aspetuck Avenue, the former home of founder Dr. Barbara Hamlin. This expansion allowed for the enrollment of over 70 children annually while maintaining the warm, welcoming atmosphere of a home. The Center’s proximity to the town green enables children to engage in enriching walking trips to local libraries, senior centers, and businesses, fostering a deep sense of community connection.

Comprehensive Programs for All Ages

Initially focused on preschool-aged children, the Center has expanded its offerings to include after-school programs for kindergarteners, first, and second graders. In 2003, an infant/toddler program was introduced, which was further divided in 2020 to cater specifically to infants and toddlers. This evolution reflects the Center’s commitment to responding to community and parental needs, now serving children from 3 months to 8 years old.

Commitment to Excellence

Ensuring the health and safety of children is paramount. The Children’s Center meets or exceeds all guidelines set by the Connecticut State Department of Health. Notably, it is the first state-funded early childhood education center in Connecticut to achieve accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). This prestigious accreditation, maintained since 1986, signifies a commitment to excellence in early childhood education, providing a safe, healthy environment, well-trained teachers, and a developmentally appropriate curriculum.

Making Quality Education Accessible

Believing that cost should never be a barrier to quality education, the Children’s Center offers a sliding fee scale funded by grants. This initiative allows low and lower-middle-income working parents to access top-tier early childhood programs at significantly discounted rates. Through its deep community roots and dedication to developmental learning, the Center has enriched the lives of children and families for over five decades.

Impact Statement

The Children’s Center has provided a rich environment for children to grow and flourish for over five decades, serving over 100 children every year and maintaining NAEYC accreditation since 1986.
